Interview, Maxim 11/08 issue [11 Nov 2008|11:03am]
Needless to say, Aaron Ryker isn't always liked. The brash, sometimes cocky, always blunt 33-year old native Virginian and lead singer of rock band Reverb finally crossed into the territory of childhood friends Jake Atkins and Micah Albers by getting his first taste of acting. With small parts in the films Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and his hilarious and scene stealing moments in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Ryker is about to return to what he does best by releasing his newest album, No Stranger to Shame this November. In this interview, he talks about the benefits of being on the road, what it takes to be a CB4 member, and just why Jake Atkins is the funniest guy in Hollywood.

Give us your craziest sex story.
Dude, sex is crazy. Everything about it is just fucking insane, and if people think that all sex stories aren't sexy, they're wrong. I mean, if anyone has actually bothered to see what they look like having sex, we'd never have it. We look like we've gone retarded.

Have you finally managed to sleep with a girl in every state, Mr. Rockstar?
People think that a rockstar means open doors to sex. You have to be a little discriminating about who you're with, unless you'd like to end up like Tommy Lee. Me? I'd like to think I'm fairly discriminating, and I think I've been even more so over the past year. I'm an asshole, and I could easily be called a prick, but I'm also an adult and I know I can't do this forever. For now, I'll just ride it until it can't go any farther.

What was it like growing up with the rest of the CB4 - Serenity Nyx, Jake Atkins, and Micah Albers?
I think everyone thinks that we all grew up and basically decided we were going to take over the world, but it was never really like that. We sort of grew up and did our thing, and it just so happened that we were really good at it. Jake and Micah weren't theater nerds who tried out for everything, but it's true that Serenity kind of just stuck with us. She kind of had this thing about indulging us in everything, and that was great. We just basically did our thing and enjoyed every second of it.

So how on earth did Micah and Jake talk you into movies?
Dude, I can't even begin to explain how they did that. It was just sort of a weird transition. Reverb got finished with touring, and Micah talked to the director of Walk Hard and told him that I'd be great for this small part, and I think I did pretty well. I got to go up there, and I had a lot of fun in my scenes, even getting a chance to actually perform music with Micah, who is an underrated musician. Stuff got out, and I was asked to audition for Sarah Marshall, and it was really based on who I am as a person and not as an act. Aldous is totally out there, and it just sort of snowballed from there. Micah had a lot of say in casting Step Brothers, so he pretty much tapped Jake and I to do this.

Do you believe this is the end of Reverb as we know it?
As long as I love music, there will be a Reverb. That's it, end of story.

So this entire time, you've been nothing but a relatively nice guy. Who's the real Aaron Ryker?
Both. I'm an asshole, I know it. I can't even hide that, because it's not fair to who I am. I'm a good guy too, but people are always going to talk shit about the negative and gloss over the positive. I fight for the people I love, I go that extra mile for people who mean something to me. Just because I'm honest to a fault doesn't make me an asshole all the time. I just know that people are going to talk, so I have no problem talking back. I do what I do, and people just have to learn to live with that. If you can't last long enough to see it all, then there's no reason I should be dealing with you.

You've got your friends, you've got your career, you've got it all...right?
All I need is one more thing, and no, you can't know what.
